Fundraising tips to survive COVID-19

As charities and fundraisers, we’re facing something we have never experienced before, and the truth is no one knows exactly how it will pan out. We have seen events cancelled, Government funding shift, donor giving decrease, campaigns delayed and more to come.

However, the reality is that the NEED your charity sees day-in and day-out has not gone away. In fact, it might have increased. So, what can you do in this current environment?

Take a minute

Before you panic, think about what you do have control over and focus on that. Be a voice of hope for your donors and your clients during this time.

Look after your current donors

Pay attention to those who have been giving to you. Make sure your donors know how much you value them. Say thank you, check in on them.

Share good news stories

Give your supporters an extra update, send them an email with a good news story, talk to them about how you’re still helping clients. Reinvigorate them about why they started giving to you in the first place.

Be the voice for your clients

If applicable, show supporters how the recent happenings have affected your client base and those more vulnerable. Be an advocate for your clients.

Keep it real

Get your staff, volunteers and maybe even clients on social media and ask them to share about what’s happening in the office, what needs you are meeting and what challenges you have ahead.

Get digital

Use emails, social media, phones, Facebook groups and other means to continue to build community and connections. See how your events and in-person activities can move online instead. Get creative with your service offering.

Be respectful

Acknowledge that donors are in a tough position too. Make your ask, be clear about your needs and why you are seeking help right now, but be gentle, not pushy.

Focus on relationship

Maintain your relationships with key stakeholders including Government bodies and other organisations. Look at ways you can work together, focus on solutions and ways to innovate.

Be clear in your vision

Your activities may have changed a little, but your vision has not. Strong leadership and clear vision will help you build trust right now.
