Storytelling for charities

Storytelling has always been a part of spreading the word about a charity’s work, and today it is even more important as people look for stories and content to connect with.

We know that people relate to people and stories have a way of moving us to action. The hardest part for charities is being strategic about collecting and sharing stories.

To help, I’ve put together a list of storytelling prompts. I’ve organised them under headings to give you some key themes (or content pillars) that you might want to share about.

As you read through this list, think about your charity and start to note down what stories you can be sharing. Here we go.

Who you are:

  • Client stories
  • Staff stories
  • Volunteer stories
  • CEO thought leadership
  • How you started – origin story
  • Your vision and mission
  • Key messages – how do these play out

What you do:

  • Staff helping clients
  • Clients using your services
  • The need – why do you exist, what is the problem?

How it helps

  • Clients who’ve been helped
  • Client testimonials

Current and past campaigns

  • What the campaign is
  • Why you started it
  • Who it’s helping
  • How people can get involved

Content that builds trust

  • Behind the scenes
  • Introduce senior management
  • Awards and recognition
  • Other organisations you’ve worked with

Once you start, there will countless ideas that spring to mind! Have a go and see what you can come up with for your organisation.
