For years, donors have asked the same question:
“How much of my donation goes to admin?”
And for just as long, charities have felt the pressure to say “as little as possible”—even celebrating the idea of $0 administration costs.
But here’s the truth: admin costs are essential to a charity’s impact and longevity.
We need to help donors understand that ‘administration’ isn’t a dirty word. It means:
- Qualified, experienced people are doing the work
- Staff are paid fair, sustainable wages
- The right insurance and governance are in place
- Volunteers and teams receive proper training
- The charity is investing in systems and planning for the future
In short, admin costs mean the charity is built to last.
Yes, it’s admirable when major donors cover those overheads—but wouldn’t it be better if all donors understood that a portion of their gift helps build a charity that is sustainable?
Most donors want their money to make a difference—and part of that difference is ensuring the organisation they’re supporting is strong, ethical, and well-managed.
Maybe it’s time for charities to tell this part of the story better?
